We recommend that you consider the result that the change in the appearance of your nose will also affect the other components of your face, eye, mouth and jaw dynamics.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

How is rhinoplasty surgery performed?

Rhinoplasty surgery usually takes between 90 minutes and three hours. Although the surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, it can also be performed under local anesthesia with sedation. After the procedure, you may need to stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights.

1. Consent Form

The surgeon or his assistant who will perform the surgery will give you a consent form at your preoperative consultation or before your surgery on the day of surgery. Even if you have previously investigated the risks and complications of the surgery, we recommend that you read the consent form completely before signing your consent. After signing the form, your doctor can put lines on your nose with a marker pen to help him in the surgery and take your photo after getting your consent.

2. Anesthesia

Your anesthesiologist will choose between local and general anesthesia according to your situation. In cases where your surgeon uses general anesthesia, you may feel sleepy for a short time after surgery..

3.Incision (Cuts)

Your surgeon can perform rhinoplasty using an open or closed approach. After examining you during the consultation, your surgeon will decide on the most appropriate approach for you.

Closed Technique Nose Aesthetics

For closed rhinoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision in your nostril and perform the operation from there. The advantage of this operation is that bruises and swelling after surgery are much less than open surgery.

Open Technique Nose Aesthetics

In open rhinoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision inside the nostrils and in the area between the nostrils called the collumella. The advantage of this approach is that it allows for changes that are not always possible with a closed nose-shaped approach. This approach is the most advantageous for increasing the size of your nose.

Grafts and Implants

Surgeons do not always need the use of grafts or implants in rhinoplasty procedures. However, the use of grafts and implants is needed in rhinoplasty operations performed to increase the size of the nose.

The procedure where the surgeon moves the tissue from the patient's own body to a different part of the body is called a graft. In the rhinoplasty procedure, cartilage grafts taken from the ear, bone, hip, elbow or skull are used to create the nasal structure. The grafts always contain the tissues taken from the patient himself and therefore the patient's body does not reject the graft.

In some cases, it may be appropriate to accommodate the changes you want to make with the procedure because the patient's tissues are small or weak. In these cases, your surgeon may choose to use an artificial nasal implant. These implants are made of approved materials such as silicone or Gore-Tex and have the advantage of not shrinking over time.

4. Closing the incisions

Your surgeon will close your incisions with stitches. In addition, your doctors use a dressing to fill both nostrils and apply a splint to keep your nose fixed.

5. Returning to your room

After your surgery is over, our healthcare staff will take you back to your room. If your surgery was performed under general anesthesia, it is normal to wake up slowly and feel sleepy for a few hours. After 1 or 2 nights, you will be ready to return home.

Rhinoplasty consultation

What should I expect from my rhinoplasty consultation?

You will get together with your surgeon for a consultation before having a rhinoplasty. During this meeting, your surgeon will examine your face and nose and take pictures of your face if you give permission. Your nasal aesthetic consultation usually takes between 15 minutes and 1 hour. During this visit, you can talk to the doctor about the operation and get answers to all your questions. During this visit, your doctor will ask you questions about:

  • Your current state of health
  • Any ongoing illness
  • Your medical history
  • Your surgical history
  • The medicines you are using (including herbal medicines)
  • Alcohol, smoking, drug abuse
  • Allergies

Your expectations from the surgery

Try to gather accurate information about the operation by asking questions to your doctor before your surgery. Being open and honest allows your surgeon to formulate your wishes healthier. For this reason, it is in your best interest to have a clear idea of your surgeon's expectations from the surgery in terms of the results of the surgery. In this way, after a communication, your surgeon will inform you whether your goals are realistic and as a result, you will be more likely to be satisfied with the final results.

Questions to ask during your rhinoplasty consultation

Consultation is a good opportunity to ask questions for both you and your surgeon. We recommend that you create and write your questions by thinking about the important issues for you before coming to the consultation. In this way, you will not miss any subject. Some of the questions you might want to ask during your consultation:

  • Is rhinoplasty a suitable surgery for me?
  • What is the best surgical approach for my nose?
  • Will I feel pain after the surgery?
  • Will there be any scars? If so, where?
  • How long will the healing process take?
  • Are my expectations from the surgery realistic?
  • Can I see the before and after pictures of the rhinoplasty surgeries you performed before and after?
  • What are my options if I am not satisfied with the postoperative results?

Rhinoplasty risks and complications

What are the most common rhinoplasty risks and complications?

Before filling in the consent form for rhinoplasty surgery, you should be informed by the doctor about the risks and complications and you should discuss this issue in your mind. Most of the risks and complications of rhinoplasty are rare.

Rhinoplasty risks and complications include:

Bleeding

Small bleeding is common after this procedure. Post-operative mild nosebleeds are normal. Your surgeon will inform you about ways to prevent bleeding problems.

Heavy bleeding is rare but can have severe consequences. This type of bleeding can occur immediately after the procedure or a few weeks later and requires immediate medical attention.

Infection

Since surgery is an invasive method, rhinoplasty surgery involves infection risks.

Signs of infection to watch out for include:

  • Fever of -38 ° C or higher
  • Redness that starts on the wound line and spreads around
  • Yellow pus-like, foul-smelling liquid around the wound
  • Pain that cannot be controlled with medications

Mild infections usually improve with the use of antibiotics. Although infections are rare after this procedure, they can affect the final results of your operation. In such cases, extra surgery may be required.

Respiratory Problems

Because of the swelling in the nostrils, it is quite normal for you to experience breathing problems in the first week after surgery. As a result of the swelling in the nose, the air flow in the nose decreases. This problem disappears after full recovery.

Loss of sense of smell

Changes in your sense of smell that may occur after rhinoplasty are in most cases temporary and in most cases will only be noticed when tested by a doctor.

Damage to the nasal septum

During this procedure, damage may occur to the cartilage wall in the center of the nose (septum). Depending on the extent of the damage, there are medical and / or surgical options for repairing this damage. Your doctor will inform you about this during the consultation.

Scar

Scars from rhinoplasty surgery are often invisible, especially if your doctor uses a closed incision approach. The healing time of your wounds depends entirely on the strength of your skin. Your surgeon will give you information about the wounds that may occur specific to the technique.

Rhinoplasty revision

There is a risk of collapse of the structure of the nose in patients who need additional surgery related to nasal aesthetics. For this reason, reoperation is rarely recommended.

Pre-Surgery Preparation for Rhinoplasty

What should be done before rhinoplasty surgery?

After the operation, you should go through the recovery process in a comfortable environment. Taking care of your daily work and similar things before the surgery will prepare this environment for you. You can read some of our recommendations for pre-surgery below.

Chores

Housework can be difficult for people, even on any given day. For this reason, we recommend that you take care of the things that should be done at home before the surgery. In this way, you can spend the first days of your postoperative recovery period more comfortably.

Shopping

Going to the grocery store can be difficult for you in the first days of recovery. Therefore, we recommend that you go shopping and fill your refrigerator before coming to the hospital. Get this done before the surgery and don't worry about it after the surgery.

Children and pets

To minimize your stress levels during your recovery period, you may want to organize your family or friends to help you take care of your children and pets.

Eye Care

It is very important not to apply pressure to the nose area in the weeks following your rhinoplasty. For this reason, if you wear glasses, you should stop wearing them for at least 6 weeks after surgery. Wearing contact lenses can help you during this period.

Drive

You will not be in a position to drive home after the surgery. It is helpful to arrange a family member or friend to assist you in this matter.

Diet

After surgery, your doctor will give you a diet program that includes high-protein, low-sodium foods, along with fruits and vegetables. Remember to drink water and avoid drinks that contain caffeine. We recommend that you avoid high amounts of salt and sugar during your recovery period.

Clothing

In your recovery period after rhinoplasty, you should wear zippered clothes that can be buttoned from the front or back. Clothes that need to touch your head while dressing will be a bad choice.

Sleep

Keep lots of extra pillows with you while you sleep. Sleep in an inclined position on your back for the first few days. This position will prevent you from contacting the treatment area and possible swelling that may occur.

Post-rhinoplasty care

Recovery period after rhinoplasty?

Your doctor will inform you about medical care after rhinoplasty during the consultation. Your doctor will inform you about the date you can start activities such as driving, exercise and return to work.

While it may be difficult to slow down the pace of life, please remember that all the advice from your surgeons is for your well-being. Your surgeon will also give you information about the medications you should use during your recovery.

Some recommendations after nasal aesthetics

Immediately after surgery

If your surgeon decides to use general anesthesia, you may wake up gradually after surgery. Memory and concentration may be affected, but this only lasts for one to two days. If your doctor chooses to use a local anesthetic, you may feel a loss of sensation in your nose, but this will disappear in a short time. You may not be able to breathe through your nose for a short time after surgery.

Homecoming

You will be able to return home within 1 to 2 days. Since you will not be suitable for driving after the surgery, it would be beneficial to arrange someone to pick you up from the hospital. Before leaving the hospital, your surgeon will schedule a check-up appointment for you in the coming weeks. At this appointment, your surgeon will examine your nose, remove any stitches that cannot be dissolved, and change the dressing if necessary. At your check-up appointment, your surgeons will continue to advise you about postoperative care.

Pain management

Mild pain, swelling, and bruising around the nose are normal after surgery and will disappear completely within three to six weeks. You can use paracetamol, cold compress and pain reliever for pain. In addition, sleeping by supporting your head with pillows will reduce swelling and pain.

Dressing

Your surgeon will likely "pack" your nostrils with dressings and apply a splint to your nose to maintain its new shape. For this reason, you may need to breathe through the mouth for a while after your rhinoplasty. To protect your stitches, sneeze with your mouth open after the procedure. Also, avoid blowing or removing scabs around the wound until your doctor has removed your splint. During your follow-up appointment, your surgeon will remove the splint approximately 7-10 days after your surgery.

Returning to work

We recommend that you take approximately two weeks off after the procedure before returning to work. In addition, you should avoid dirty or smoky areas for at least four to six weeks.

Exercise

Avoid strenuous activity, weight exercise and sports for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery.

General tips

You should avoid blowing and sneezing after surgery. If you have any allergies, avoid environments where allergens are present. Protect your splint from water and do not take a hot bath.

Final Results

You will be able to see aesthetic differences in your nose within the first few weeks after the operation, but you should wait for a recovery period of 6-12 months for the full result.

Since the incisions used for this procedure are either inside the nostrils or on the skin between the nostrils, the scars will not be visible.

Following your surgeon's specific nasal aesthetic medical care recommendations will eliminate potential complications and help you get the best results from the procedure.
